Film Genre - Teen genre

 The teen genre didn't always exist. Hollywood came up with this genre shortly after the term "teenager" was created. Teen movies came out in the 1950s but became more famous around the 1970s. These movies were created to interest teens. A lot of the movies in this genre involved high school parties, first loves, cliques and showed teens coming of age.

During the development of this genre some of the big actors were Sandra Dee who was in one of the first movies ever created for teens. The movie was called Gidget, it came out in 1959 and was all about surfing and love. Another actor was Robert Cummings, he stared in Beach party in 1963. This movies main focus was sexual tension(love) & surfing. Sissy Spacek was one of the main actors in one of the first teen horror movies. The movie was called Carrie and it was released in 1976. Also the "Brat Pack" was very famous among teens in the 1980s they were involved in the Breakfast Club in 1985.

The teen genre has a lot of movies but the stylistics are all pretty much the same. Some of the main ones are conflict with parents, first true love and partying. These are the top three and are in almost all teen movies. Another few major ones are sexual tension, struggling to fit in and drama. With these 6 stylistics you can basically describe and film every teens life with no struggle.

Some values that teen movies show in all the movies in this genre are to be who you are and love who you want, no matter what anyone else says or thinks. They do this because teens are always changing who they are and not being with who they love because someone makes fun of them or doesn't approve. Teens need to be more confident in themselves and trust more in themselves. Another one is you can truly change a lot if you want, it all depends on who you hang with. If you're not enjoying the way you are or what you're doing you can change that but changing who you hang out with. Two movies that really show these values are "A walk to remember" and "10 things I hate about you".

Newer movies that are in the teen genre are;
Post Grad -

Easy A-

Thirteen -
All these movies are about fitting in, trying to get ahead in life and sexual tension. Also within these movies there's conflict with parents, friends and boyfriends. Although these are newer teen movies, movies from the 60s are all about the same stuff. Teens will always be the same no matter what year it is. Teen movies are great if you're looking for a drama filled, romance with lots of partying and sexual comments.
